The formats
JSON and CSV at a glance
What is a JSON file?
JSON is a text format for structured data made of objects, arrays, strings, numbers, and true or false values. It's the standard format for web APIs and config files, and every programming language can read it. Nested data doesn't map directly onto a flat table. It opens in any text editor, VS Code, browsers, and every programming language.
What is a CSV file?
CSV stores a table as plain text, one row per line, with commas between the columns. Almost every spreadsheet, database, and analytics tool can import and export it, which makes it the default format for moving data between systems. It has no formatting, formulas, or multiple sheets. It opens in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers, LibreOffice Calc, any text editor, and practically every database and programming language.
Good to know
What changes when you convert JSON to CSV
- Each object in an array becomes a row. Nested objects are flattened into columns like address.city, and lists are written as JSON text.
- Very large files, in the hundreds of megabytes, may be slow, and the preview shows only the beginning.
FAQ
Questions, answered
How are nested JSON objects represented in CSV?
Nested property names become dotted headings such as address.city. Arrays and values that cannot fit naturally into one cell are serialized so their information is not silently discarded.
Is this JSON to CSV converter free?
Yes. It's completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark, and no limit on how many files you convert. It costs Ethical Tube nothing to run, because the conversion happens on your own device rather than on a server.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser with open-source CSV, JSON, YAML, XML, and Excel libraries, so your files never leave your device. Once the page has loaded, it even works offline.
Can I paste JSON instead of uploading a file?
Yes. Paste JSON text onto the page and it's converted the same way. Nothing you paste leaves your browser.
Can I convert several JSON files at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like. They're converted one after another, and you can download each CSV file as soon as it's ready or all of them in one ZIP file.
Does it work on iPhone, Android, Mac, and Windows?
Yes. It works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari, on computers and phones.
What can open a CSV file?
Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers, LibreOffice Calc, any text editor, and practically every database and programming language.
Is there a file size limit?
There's no upload limit because nothing is uploaded. The practical limit is your device's memory: everyday files are fine, and most computers handle files of a few hundred megabytes.
