A Loom alternative that keeps your videos on your computer

Ethical Tube is a free screen recorder that runs in your browser. Like Loom, it records your whole screen or a single app while you talk. Unlike Loom, it saves the video straight to your computer: there's no account, nothing is uploaded, and there's no 5-minute limit or 25-video cap.

Records everything on one display, including your code editor and terminal.

Why switch

Why people look for a Loom alternative

Loom is built around the cloud: every recording uploads to Loom, and you share a link. That's handy for quick team updates, but it comes with trade-offs.

  • The free plan runs out fast

Loom's free Starter plan stops screen recordings at 5 minutes and keeps up to 25 videos per person.

  • Downloads need a paid plan

On Starter, you can't download your own recordings. With Ethical Tube, every recording is a file on your computer.

  • Your screen ends up on someone else's servers

Code, customer data, and internal tools all upload to Loom. Ethical Tube never uploads anything.

  • One more account to manage

Loom needs a sign-up. Ethical Tube works the moment the page loads.

How it works

Record, stop, and download

  1. Pick what to record

Your entire screen, or a single app like your code editor, design tool, or terminal.

  2. Record with your voice

A 3-second countdown gives you time to switch apps, and floating controls let you pause or stop from anywhere.

  3. Download your video

Watch it back, then save it to your computer. Share the file however you like.

Honest comparison

When Loom is the better choice

Ethical Tube does one job: it records your screen and gives you the file. Loom is a better fit if you need:

  • A share link that works the moment you stop recording
  • Comments, reactions, and view insights on each video
  • Transcripts, captions, and AI summaries
  • Desktop and mobile apps

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is Ethical Tube really free?

Yes. Recording and downloading are free, with no account, no watermark, no time limit, and no limit on how many videos you make.

Does Ethical Tube upload my recordings?

No. Your video is recorded in your browser and saved straight to your computer. Nothing is sent to a server.

Can I share an Ethical Tube video like a Loom link?

Not yet. You get a video file instead, which you can send in Slack or email, or upload to Google Drive or YouTube.

What format are the videos?

MP4 in Chrome and Edge on Windows and Mac, which plays in QuickTime, on Windows, and on phones, and uploads to YouTube and Google Drive. On Linux, on Chromebooks, and in Firefox, you get a WebM file instead.

Which browsers does Ethical Tube work in?

Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge on a desktop or laptop. Phones and tablets can't record their screen from a web page.
