Record your screen in Chrome, no extension needed

Ethical Tube is a free screen recorder that runs in your browser. It uses the screen sharing built into Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, so there's no extension or app to install. Record your entire screen or a single app with your microphone, then download the video.

How it works

How to record your screen in Chrome

  1. Open Ethical Tube in Chrome

Edge works too. You'll need a desktop or laptop computer.

  2. Pick Entire screen or App window

Entire screen captures everything on one display. App window captures a single app, like your code editor.

  3. Click Start recording

Chrome asks what to share. Pick your screen or window, then click Share.

  4. Switch to your app

A 3-second countdown gives you time to get ready. Floating controls let you pause or stop from any app.

  5. Download the video

When you stop, watch it back and click Download video to save it to your computer.

No extension

Why use a web page instead of an extension

  • Nothing to install

There's no extension to add, update, or remove. Open the page and record.

  • Fewer permissions

Recording extensions often ask to read and change data on every site you visit. Ethical Tube only sees the screen or window you choose to share, and only while you share it.

  • Chrome's own screen picker

You choose what to share in the same dialog Google Meet uses, and Chrome shows a Stop sharing button the whole time you record.

  • Works in Edge too

Microsoft Edge is built on the same engine as Chrome, so recording works the same way.

Troubleshooting

Fixing common recording problems

  • Your Mac blocks screen recording

Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording, turn on Chrome, then quit and reopen Chrome.

  • Your code editor isn't in the video

You probably shared a browser tab. Stop, choose Entire screen or App window, and pick your editor in Chrome's dialog.

  • There's no computer audio

Chrome can share system audio on some computers but not others. Your microphone still records your voice.

  • QuickTime won't play the video

Recordings made on Linux and Chromebooks are WebM files, which QuickTime can't open. Play them in Chrome or VLC, or turn them into MP4s with Ethical Tube's free WebM to MP4 converter, which also runs in your browser.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How do I record my screen in Chrome without an extension?

Open a web-based recorder like Ethical Tube, choose what to record, and click Start recording. Chrome's built-in screen sharing captures your screen, and you download the video when you stop.

Can Chrome record my whole screen, not just a tab?

Yes. Choose Entire screen in Ethical Tube, then pick your display in Chrome's share dialog. Everything on that display is recorded, including other apps.

Does it work in Microsoft Edge?

Yes. Edge is built on the same engine as Chrome and supports the same screen sharing.

Does it work on a Chromebook?

Ethical Tube uses Chrome's built-in screen sharing, which ChromeOS supports, and videos save as WebM files. If you need an MP4, Ethical Tube's free WebM to MP4 converter changes it in your browser. On a school or work Chromebook, an administrator may need to allow screen capture.

Is recording my screen in Chrome private?

With Ethical Tube, yes. The recording is made in your browser and saved to your computer. It's never uploaded.
